How To Make a Pop Tab Belt

Updated: Feb 29, 2024

Do you remember pop tab belts? I’m not sure when this trend originated, maybe in the 80’s? Yes I’m from the Midwest where we call soda - pop! I tried to find out when Pop Tab Belts first became popular, but Google was no help. So if you happen to have any resources on this, please share!

First you will need approximately 100 tabs for a belt. I purchased mine on Amazon for about $10 for 1,000 tabs. I’m using black pleather ribbon to string them all together. I’m going to make this for my daughter as she enjoys fashion even something kind of fun and quirky like this!

Pop Tab Belt

I originally measured about 12 feet of the pleather, but this turned out to be way too much. So, I would say probably around 6-7 feet for a 26” waist with an additional 6” on each side of the belt to tie it together. I tied a loop at the end so I didn’t have to worry about the pop tabs sliding off as I went, but also to leave enough ribbon so that the belt could tie together at both ends.

To get started, take your first pop tab and have it face upside down and thread each end through one of the holes and pull it through. Then take another one and make sure that the shiny side is up and put it in the middle of the first pop tab so they overlap. Then you thread down from the first one down through the bottom one and repeat with the other ribbon. Then you take another tab, make sure the shiny side is down and halfway crossing from the previous tab and pull the thread up from the bottom. Making sure to go through the new one and the one before it. Take another one and shiny side up, go down through the new tab and the one before it. Continue until you get the length you want. The way I remembered which way the thread needs to go is shiny side down, pull up through the bottom. Shiny side up, pull down through the top.

This whole process probably took me about 2 hours to do. I actually ended up taking about 10 tabs off as I measure it around my daughter’s waste and it was too big.

This was really fun to make and as you can see, it turned out really cute! It may be easier for you to get the idea of how I made this with this video. Have fun and if you decide to make this, post it in Our Crafts section and share with everyone!
