Do you ever walk into your garage and feel completely overwhelmed by the chaos? Are you tired of not being able to find what you need or having to navigate through a sea of clutter? This is exactly how I feel every time I walk into our pole barn (aka, bigger garage…to hold more stuff). Luckily, we tackled our garage a couple of years ago and my husband keeps it pretty organized. But our pole barn, that’s another problem! As I’m navigating my way through cleaning out the pole barn, I wanted to bring you along with this YouTube Series as well as give you some tips below to help you reclaim that valuable space. Our hope is to turn this space into our dream workshop! So roll up your sleeves, grab some gloves, and let's get started!
Step 1: Set Clear Goals
Before diving headfirst into the task at hand, it's important to set clear goals for your garage organization project. Ask yourself questions like:
- What do I want to achieve with this project?
- How do I envision my garage looking after it's organized?
- What specific areas do I want to focus on?
By setting clear goals, you'll have a roadmap to follow throughout the process and stay motivated.
Step 2: Declutter and Sort
Now that you have your goals in mind, it's time to tackle the clutter. Start by taking everything out of your garage and sorting them into three piles: keep, donate/sell, and toss. Be ruthless in your decision-making process. If you haven't used an item in years or if it no longer serves a purpose or doesn’t work, it's time to say goodbye.
As you sort through your belongings, ask yourself:
- Do I really need this item?
- Does it bring me joy or serve a practical purpose?
- Can I repurpose or upcycle it for future craft projects?
Remember, the more you declutter now, the easier it will be to maintain an organized garage in the long run.
Step 3: Categorize and Prioritize
With the clutter cleared away, it's time to categorize and prioritize your belongings. Group similar items together, such as tools, gardening supplies, and craft materials. This will make it easier to find what you need when you're knee-deep in a DIY project.
Once you've categorized everything, prioritize the items based on frequency of use. Keep frequently used items easily accessible and place lesser-used items towards the back or higher shelves. Consider investing in storage solutions such as shelving units, pegboards, and clear plastic bins to keep everything organized and visible.
Step 4: Create Zones
Now that everything is sorted and prioritized, it's time to create designated zones within your garage. This will help maximize efficiency and make it easier to maintain an organized space. Here are some zone ideas:
1. Crafting Zone: Dedicate an area for all your crafting supplies, whether it's a table for projects or a wall-mounted organizer for tools.
2. Gardening Zone: Set aside space for your gardening tools, pots, and soil.
3. Sports Equipment Zone: Keep all your sports equipment together for easy access.
4. Seasonal Storage Zone: Designate an area for storing seasonal items like holiday decorations or winter gear.
By creating specific zones, you'll know exactly where everything belongs, making cleanup a breeze.
Step 5: Utilize Vertical Space
Garages often have limited floor space, so it's crucial to utilize vertical space effectively. Install shelves along the walls to store items that aren't used frequently but still need to be easily accessible. Hang bikes from hooks on the ceiling or wall to free up valuable floor space. Use magnetic strips or pegboards to hang tools and smaller items.
Remember, the more you can get off the floor and onto the walls or ceiling, the more room you'll have for your creative endeavors! Or maybe even a car!
Step 6: Maintenance is Key
Once you've successfully organized and cleaned out your overwhelming garage, establish a regular maintenance routine. Here are some tips:
- Set aside time each month to declutter and reorganize.
- Put things back in their designated zones after each use.
- Avoid accumulating unnecessary items by practicing mindful consumption.
By staying consistent with your maintenance routine, you'll prevent your garage from becoming overwhelming again.
Step 7: Celebrate Your Achievement!
Take a moment to step back and admire your hard work. You've transformed your chaotic garage into a functional and inspiring space for all your crafting and DIY projects. Now it's time to celebrate!
Invite friends over for a craft night or host a DIY workshop in your newly organized garage. Share your before-and-after photos on social media and inspire others to tackle their own organizational challenges.
Remember, organizing and cleaning out an overwhelming garage is not just about creating physical space but also about creating mental space for creativity and inspiration. So go ahead, embrace the process, and let your creative spirit soar!
